The Effect of Reminiscence-Oriented Group Arts Therapy on the Ego Integrity, Depression and Quality of Life for the Elderly Patients with Dementia in a Nursing Home

Abstract
This study aims to examine the effect of reminiscence-oriented group arts therapy of elderly patients with dementia in a nursing home. Selecting 50 elderly patients with dementia of a nursing home in G city of Jeollabuk-do, the final research subjects were total 40 people including 20 for the experimental group and another 20 for the control group. From the fourth week of May 2016 to the second week of July 2016, total 15 sessions of reminiscence-oriented group arts therapy program were conducted 80 minutes per session, twice a week. Researching the demographic characteristics of the subjects, the Ego Integrity Scale, Short Form of Geriatric Depression Scale-Korean(SGDS-K), and Geriatric Quality Of Life-Dementia(GQOL-D) were used for evaluation. To see the prior agreement of the control group and experimental group, the independent sampling t-test was conducted. In order to see the effects of therapy, the repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted to examine differences between groups, differences between measured times, and effect size of interactions between group and measured times. This study verified the reminiscence-oriented group arts therapy as an effective program to significantly decrease depression and also to improve the quality of life and ego integrity of elderly patients with dementia in a nursing home, which suggests the clinical implications that could be usefully applied in the future.
